Schroeder Swim School - based at Aug Prep, is also in its eighth year. The Schroeder Swim School is the first step for area youth to enter the water, learn to swim and start a career in competitive swimming. Schroeder provides staff for all Aug Prep lessons during the school day.
- The Schroeder Swim School operates during the school day, after school hours in the evenings, weekends and during the summer
- Participants learn in one of the best facilities in the area - warm shallow water with ample stair space.
- The primary mission of the Schroeder Swim School is to move children onto Schroeder’s competitive teams

Position Description
The Schroeder Swim School and St. Augustine Preparatory Academy work cooperatively to teach both students at Aug Prep during the school day and the community during evenings and weekends. Ideal candidates have had significant experience in all phases of learning to swim from infant to elementary school age instruction. Competitive swimming background is not essential but helpful.
The Swim Instructor must be committed to safety, reliability and timeliness and must enjoy helping children to be comfortable, safe and eager about the prospect of joining Schroeder’s swim team and/or Aug Prep’s swim team.
Job Responsibilities and Roles
- Support aquatics staff and programs by providing direction, leadership and support.
- Work directly with Aquatics Leadership and in their absence to ensure excellence and consistency in service through daily care of students, program participants and parents.
- Strictly adhere to all aquatics policies and procedures related to safety, conduct rules and other regulations.
- Represent and articulate Aug Prep and Schroeder’s mission and program to individuals, businesses & communities..
- Provide high quality swim instruction based on the Schroeder Swim School curriculum.
- Enforce safety rules and regulations to prevent accidents.
- Make rescues and administer first aid when necessary.
- Evaluate students’ progress, and interact with parents/guardians on the activities and development of students’ swim skills.
- Inspect pool areas before and after each class for possible maintenance, cleanliness or damage issues.
- Maintain and ensure proper storage of all pool equipment.
Required Qualifications:
- Ability to work with children.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Demonstrate written and verbal communication skills; public speaking and ability to conduct training programs.
- Current Lifeguard and Swim Instructor certification or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire is required. Lifeguard Instructor certification is a plus.
- Punctuality and reliability is a must!
- Positive history of leadership in the areas of staff and volunteer supervision.
- Proven ability to display initiative, good judgment and ability to make decisions with minimal input.
- Competent computer skills.
- High level of knowledge and demonstrated competence in the areas of Aquatics
- Competitive swimming background is a plus
- Must pass background screenings

Expectations
- The full time instructor position is a year round position. Instructors will be teaching school students during the academic calendar during the school day, and to work at least 2 nights a week, or a night and a weekend.
- Hours may change monthly depending on the school schedule.
- During the summer, when school is not in session, daytime lessons as well as 2 nights and/or a weeknight and a weekend.
- Instructors may not take Schroeder Swim School techniques and written material to other locations or businesses
- Instructors will help train new employees, and be an on-deck supervisor when needed
- Instructors are employees of the non-profit organization Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center, Ltd and will report to both Aug Prep staff and Schroeder staff.
- Full time instructors are eligible for a retirement benefit
- Full time instructors may be able to participate in USA Swimming’s Coach health care program.
