High School PLTW - Engineering Educator

 

POSITION INFORMATION

St. Augustine Preparatory Academy is seeking a candidate to fill a full-time Project Lead the Way (“PLTW”) Engineering Educator. Wisconsin Teaching Certification and PLTW course training certificate desirable, but not required. Experience with urban youth and the ability to utilize technology, network with post-secondary educational entities and identify resources to increase the student’s opportunities for post-secondary selection, application, funding, matriculation and completion/graduation preferred. Coaching and other co-curricular assignments are available.

JOB DESCRIPTION

St. Augustine Preparatory Academy is a new K4-12 Christian School coming to Milwaukee’s Southside at 2607 S. 5th Street in August of 2017. The school will be a student-centered environment where young learners take ownership of their education not only in academics, but also physical health, creativity, and faith. REPORTING STRUCTURES

The PLTW Engineering Educator will report to the High School Principal.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The High School program at St. Augustine Preparatory Academy combines research-based best instructional practices while also acknowledging the social, emotional, and developmental needs of every student. Students learn best when they are engaged in genuine and authentic learning experiences that align with their evolving interests, inspiring their natural curiosities and empowering them for future success.

Therefore, students at St. Augustine Prep High School will be immersed in both traditional and cross-curricular learning experiences, focused on their own personalized learning needs with a high degree of learner responsibility, empowered by student voice and choice. All educators, including the PLTW Engineering educator, are expected to plan for and participate in both traditional and cross-curricular teaching and learning experiences for students. All learning spaces will be equipped with innovative technology to assist all educators in differentiation, individualization, personalization, skill development, and accelerated programming for students based on their individual needs. The High School core curricular areas align with common core state standards, in addition to learning experiences provided in the fine arts (music, dance, theater, and visual arts), career education, STEM (PLTW) and business, as well as physical education and Spanish.

As a result, St. Augustine Prep High School’s graduate will fully embody the school's mission and vision. The PLTW Engineering educator will use his/her network of skills, knowledge, post-secondary educational entities, scholarships and financial aid as well as technical skill to increase each student’s information base, college-going experiences and opportunities for post-secondary success.

A ST. AUGUSTINE PREPARATORY HIGH SCHOOL PLTW engineering EDUCATOR IS:

  • Willing to complete PLTW certification courses as needed for the course teaching requirements
  • Prepares program course scope and sequence as well as course outlines following curriculum guidelines and requirements of PLTW, State and St. Aug Prep
  • A highly-motivated individual who enjoys teaching aspiring scientists, engineers and programmers the knowledge and real-world problem-solving skills required for success in these professions
  • Flexible with a can-do attitude given our continually evolving environment and school culture.
  • Provides an innovative and creative commitment to STEM education and an overall passion for the project, problem-based learning with real world application.
  • Ensures all students acquire the course level objectives set forth in the National PLTW Curriculum.

Instructor Responsibilities

  • To engage and support students in standards-based instruction and learning.
  • To provide assessments for learning (formative assessments) and assessments of learning (summative assessments).
  • To analyze student assessments to develop instructional materials for the class including individualized and small group instruction as necessary in order to make the curriculum accessible for all students.
  • To establish and maintain high expectations for all students.
  • To create and maintain effective learning environments for all students.
  • To use a variety of research-based teaching strategies to advance student learning.
  • To communicate with parents/guardians regarding student’s individual progress.
  • To promote positive interpersonal relationships with peers, staff, students, parents/guardians, and the public.
  • To actively participate as a team member including but not limited to Professional Learning Communities and during IEPs.
  • To differentiate instruction within the PLTW curriculum.
  • To provide appropriate instructional interventions within the classroom.
  • To support a restorative approach philosophy when working with students.
  • To engage in ongoing, collaborative professional learning.
  • To provide learning experiences where students cite specific textual or experimental (data) evidence to support analysis and reasoning of their conclusions or solutions to problems.
  • To provide learning experiences where students determine the central ideas or information (claim) of a primary or secondary text source or experimental data; provide an accurate summary/reasoning that supports their conclusion or solutions to problems.
  • To provide learning experiences students evaluate various explanations for experimental data, actions or events and determine which explanation best accords with textual or experimental evidence.
  • To provide learning experiences where students determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including analyzing how an author uses and refines the meaning of a key term over the course of the text.
  • To provide learning experiences where students analyze in detail how a complex primary source is structured, including how key sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text contribute to the whole.
  • To provide learning experiences where students integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media to address a question or solve a problem.
  • To provide learning experiences where students distinguish among fact, opinion, and reasoned judgment in a text.
  • To provide learning experiences where students interact with science leaders and familiarize themselves with the Milwaukee scientific community.

Program Development Duties

Design and organize PLTW program along with other PLTW instructors
Build alliances with universities and PLTW learning community
Create and/or revise program materials
Organizing program events and an annual showcase to celebrate youth achievement

Experience in the following areas preferred:

Science Teaching
Engineering
Computer Science
Biological or Physical Sciences

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A belief in the ability of every child and a commitment to ensure excellence for each student.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s degree in Science, Computer Science, Engineering or Education a plus.
  • Experience with high need high school age students and their families.
  • Participating member in a local Church.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills; bilingual in Spanish preferred.
  • Skilled in strategic planning, project management, and organization development; able to balance a focus on big picture priorities while not losing sight of the daily classroom goals and objectives.
  • Team player committed to the St. Augustine Preparatory mission and model.
  • Lastly and most important, the candidate must demonstrate and possess the highest integrity and be able to live the values, beliefs, and culture of St. Augustine Prep.
