Post-Secondary Education Instructor and Advisor

Position Information 

St. Augustine Preparatory Academy is seeking a candidate to fill a full-time Post-Secondary Education Advisor position. Wisconsin Certification PI 34 desirable, but not required. Experience with urban youth and the ability to utilize technology, network with post-secondary educational entities and identify resources to increase the student’s opportunities for post-secondary selection, application, funding, matriculation and completion/graduation preferred. Coaching and other co-curricular assignments are available.

Job Description

St. Augustine Preparatory Academy is a new K4-12 non-denominational Christian School coming to Milwaukee’s South side at 2607 S. 5th Street in August of 2017.  The school will be a student-centered environment where young learners take ownership of their education not only in academics, but also physical health, creativity, and faith.  Our graduates will go on to achieve their highest potential and make our city, and ultimately the word, a better place.

Reporting structures: The Post-Secondary Education Advisor will report to the High School Principal.

Performance Responsibilities

The High School program at St. Augustine Preparatory Academy combines research-based best instructional practices while also acknowledging the social, emotional, and developmental needs of every student. Students learn best when they are engaged in genuine and authentic learning experiences that align with their evolving interests, inspiring their natural curiosities and empowering them for future success.

Therefore, students at St. Augustine Prep High School will be immersed in both traditional and cross-curricular learning experiences, focused on their own personalized learning needs with a high degree of learner responsibility, empowered by student voice and choice. All educators, including the post-secondary advisor, are expected to plan for and participate in both traditional and cross-curricular teaching and learning experiences for students. All learning spaces will be equipped with innovative technology to assist all educators in differentiation, individualization, personalization, skill development, and accelerated programming for students based on their individual needs. The High School core curricular areas align with common core state standards, in addition to learning experiences provided in the fine arts (music, dance, theatre, visual arts), career education (STEM), physical education, and Spanish.

As a result, St. Augustine Prep High School’s graduate will fully embody the schools mission and vision. The post-secondary education advisor will use his/her network of skills, knowledge, post-secondary educational entities, scholarships and financial aid as well as technology skill to increase each student’s information base, college going experiences and opportunities for post-secondary success.

The post-secondary education instructor and advisor must be skilled at assisting each family and student in the decision making process for their post-secondary education and designed a long-term college/career path.

A St. Augustine Preparatory Academy High School Post-Secondary Education Advisor Will:

Program Development

  • Design a post-secondary education curriculum, key events and other learning workshops/seminars for teachers, students and families.
  • Identify resources for college going experiences (summer programs, college bridge, internships, and participation in other programs like Upward Bound).
  • Build a network of post-secondary education organizations that know our graduate’s abilities and value.
  • Identify resources for college financing including Advance Placement credit options, scholarships (academic, athletic, community service.
  • Set 4 year goals/metrics and readiness indicators for each graduating class each school year with updated benchmark targets, dates, strategies/tactics and persons responsible.
  • Work in tandem with faculty and administration to ensure that the post-secondary education program is aligned to the school’s larger strategic/school plan.


  • Create a 4 year playbook for each student grades 9-12 for post-secondary education that specifically addresses best-fit options; scholarship/financial aid plans; academic and extra-curricular goals/activities and service goals.
  • Create an annual family engagement plan for grades K4-12 related to key events (parent classes, workshops, fairs, college tours) and deliverables (due dates as part of the larger school calendar).
  • Support and advise families in the decision making process for post-secondary education, college application/matriculation processes, admission standards including entrance exams, possible majors of study and college freshmen course selection.
  • Provide families of special education students with options for transition to post-secondary education.
  • Submit all application materials for students to the appropriate post-secondary educational entity with the assistance of the student’s advisor (i.e.: Common Application, Letters of Recommendation, Financial Waivers, etc.)

Coordinating and Communicating

  • Coordinate all efforts with faculty and administration.
  • Create and facilitate parent and student college knowledge group sessions and workshops and college visits.
  • Plan, organize and facilitate college fairs, tours and summer ‘college going’ activities as well as organize and lead visit from post-secondary education entities on campus.
  • Create progress reports for faculty and administration as well as for parents on college going program, activities, deliverables, events and expectations. (This information will be used for wider school newsletters, websites, etc.)
  • Maintain positive and productive relationships, focused on collective problem-solving processes, in order to create, support, and sustain an environment conducive to optimal learning

Data Management

  • Use data systems like Naviance© to track and maintain individual student academic, college going, application, scholarship, financial, matriculation, possible majors of study and college freshmen courses information.
  • Systemic progress monitoring of each student’s progress towards graduation and post-secondary educational goal to update the playbooks and Naviance© files.
  • Regular reporting on college going goals/work, readiness indicators college acceptance.
  • Analyze each student’s, graduating class and entire school transcript data to provide information on general trends, areas of focus and school wide ‘wins’ to best advise students, teachers and administration on college preparatory and going work.

Required Qualifications:

  • A belief in the ability of every child and a commitment to ensure excellence for each student.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s degree in  Career/College Counseling or Education a plus).
  • Experience with college advising with high need high school age students and their families.
  • Participating member in a local Church.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills; bilingual in Spanish preferred.
  • Skilled in strategic planning, project management, and organization development; able to balance a focus on big picture priorities while not losing sight of the annual goals and objectives.
  • Team player committed to the St. Augustine Preparatory mission and model.
  • Lastly and most important, the candidate must demonstrate and possess the highest integrity. and be able to live the values, beliefs, and culture of St. Augustine Prep.
